2022 annual statement on climate of India by IMD

The annual mean temperature of India for the year 2022 was the fifth warmest year on record since 1901. The other four warmest years on record, in descending order, were 2016, 2009, 2017, and 2010. The pre-monsoon (March–May) period was exceptionally hot in 2022, and many parts of the country experienced severe heatwave conditions during this season. The image shows the all-India mean temperature anomaly for the years 1901–2022 with respect to the 1981–2010 climatology.

There were several significant extreme weather events that occurred in India during 2022. India might be a unique country that experiences a variety of extreme weather events in a calendar year, from heatwaves to coldwaves; dust storms to snowfall; and from lightning/thunderstorms to heavy rainfall events/floods to cyclonic storms, etc. Furthermore, extreme events occurred across India from north to south and east to west.

India experienced many extreme weather events in 2022 that caused the loss of approximately 2227 human lives. Lightning and thunderstorms alone were responsible for 58% of all fatalities, followed by floods and heavy rains (37%).
Bihar, Assam, and Uttar Pradesh were the worst-affected states in 2022, which reportedly claimed more than 400, 250, and 200 deaths, respectively, mainly due to thunderstorms, lightning, extremely heavy rainfall, floods, and landslide events.
It is a remarkable success for India that the total casualties (six) due to cyclones are one of the lowest in many decades, although there were three cyclones that crossed the Indian coast during the year 2022.

During this year, 15 cyclonic disturbances were formed over the north Indian Ocean, of which three were cyclonic storms.
Three cyclones and seven depressions formed over the Bay of Bengal, whereas three depressions formed over the Arabian Sea and two were land depressions.
The three cyclonic storms are (i) Severe Cyclonic Storm MANDOUS (6–10 December), (ii) Severe Cyclonic Storm ASANI (7–12 May), and (iii) Cyclonic Storm SITRANG (22–25 October).
